Abstract

Introduction: Knowledge management is about creating, acquiring, storing, sharing, and applying knowledge within organizations to gain and sustain a competitive advantage. The popularity of knowledge management has increased rapidly and it has become a central topic of management philosophy and tool. However, it was not strategically considered and practiced in the Ethiopian healthcare management system, in a formal way. The objective of this project was therefore to analyze knowledge management need for knowledge management System Implementation Strategy in Addis Ababa City Health Bureau and Associated Public Facilities. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study is employed and self administered questions and checklists were used to collect data. A total of 175 study participants were selected from Addis Ababa Health Bureau, three hospitals, three sub city health offices, and five health centers. A stratified sampling was employed to select and to group the different facility levels and stratus inside the institutions, namely the health bureau, health offices, hospitals, health centers, and units and departments in the institutions. Simple random sampling method was used to select proportionate participant institutions based on their respective totals and relative staff numbers. Finally, purposive sampling was carried to categorize and select the 175 participants as chief executives and medical directors, Unit heads (technical), and Front-line heads (non-technical). Result: The majority staffs are not conscious about knowledge management. In contrast, more administrative staffs were aware than technical staffs, and more regional health bureau work forces were informed about knowledge management than the other facilities studied. Competency enhancement need had the highest impact on knowledge management need followed by knowledge sharing attitude. There was also deprived corporate knowledge culture practices and high need for capacity development which in turn present strong inference and support in favor of the knowledge management need. The poor corporate knowledge management culture and practices and elevated need of capacity development in accordance with the deprived status and awareness of knowledge management in the studied organizations witnessed for gap availability and non-existence of knowledge management system in all the facilities, which called for implementation strategy. Conclusion and recommendation: This study has shown that there was poor understanding of knowledge management. Therefore, trainings on knowledge management and introduction of knowledge management course in professional trainings and in general syllabus would be best approach for overall efficient and effective healthcare knowledge management.
