Abstract

The steel manufacturing industries are crucial to the development of any modern economy. Steel, being the recycled material is one of the top inputs/products in the manufacturing sector, worldwide. However, the increasing demand for it was mainly generated by the development projects that have been growing along the world, especially the infrastructural works and real estate. As a result, the firms across the industry have been pushed to operate near to their full capacity to overcome the increasing demand of iron and steel, while the Ethiopian economy has been experiencing a lack of domestic steel supply because the capacity for steel production is limited. On the other hand, the iron and steel industry can be regarded as a strategic sector for the national economy, playing a crucial role in the economic development by providing the basic materials for construction, automobiles, electronics and different manufacturing industries. From Ethiopian perspective, the development of the iron and steel industry reflects not only the role played in the overall development of the economy through technical input-output relationships, used to examine the impact of the iron and steel industry on the economy, but also the measures taken from socio-economic perspectives in framing industrial policy. With this, the thesis will examine the extent to which the Ethiopian steel manufacturing industry has been a major contributor to the recent economic development. Additionally, the role of the steel manufacturing industry in the industrialization, considered to be the backbone for economic development, is traced by using the policy foundations and directions triggering investment and industrial growth, as well as the contribution of this sector in the expansion of other industries in Ethiopia.
