Abstract

Background: Pregnancy and childbirth is a special period in a woman’s life, which involves significant physical, hormonal, psychological, social, and cultural changes that may influence her own sexuality as well as the health of a couple’s sexual relationship. Objectives: The study was done to assess the postpartum sexual activity among in union women within 14 weeks of their childbirth in six health centres in Addis Ababa. Methods: A facility - based prospective cross-sectional study was done using a structured questionnaire in six heath centers; with calculated sample size of 424 postpartum women. Descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation (SD), minimum, maximum), frequency and binary logistic regression were employed to analyze. Results: Sexual intercourse was resumed by 78.3% of the women within 14 weeks of childbirth. Of these 57.8% had their intercourse during the puerperium. The main reasons for resumption of sexual intercourse were husbands’ demands, cultural demands and inherent interest to have sex. The study participants had 21.2% sexual associated problems. Of those who had sexual intercourse and had problems only 13.7% sought medical assistance. The reasons for not resuming sexual intercourse within 14 weeks were husband was away(37%) and not felling good(22.8%) and no interest (21.9%) . parity (p=.015, residence(p=.000) and return of menses(p=.000) were significantly associated with early initiation of sexual intercourse. Conclusion: Most women resumed sexual intercourse within 14 weeks of childbirth and had high morbidity.
