Abstract

Introduction: Globally, the costs of work-related stress are estimated to be approximately $5.4 billion each year, and it is second to the most frequent occupational health problem. Work place stress occurs in all professions but in particular health care professional are highly prone to work place stress. Health care professionals comprise an important group that can be impacted by workplace stress because of their unique work environment. In health care, employee work place stress can have a negative impact on the quality of patient care, and significant effect on the occurrence of health problems, changing the current working place, changing the job, quitting the profession, and interrupting relationship with co-workers. In general workplace stress may lead to costly negative outcomes. Objectives: To determine the level and sources of workplace stress among Health Care Professionals in Felege-Hiwot Referral Hospital Bahir Dar North West Ethiopia, 2015. Methods: Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted among randomly selected health care professionals in Felege-Hiwot Referral Hospital to fulfill the main objective of this study. Data were collected by using self-administered structured questionnaire. 208 questioners were distributed and 198 were returned and valid for analysis. The collected data were entered into EPI-info version 7 and exported to Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20 for analysis. Frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations were used to present the descriptive analysis. Binary logistic regression used to test associations between variables and those variables that had p-value 0.20 and less were entered to multiple backward logistic regression to control possible confounders. The significance level used for the inferential statistics was 0.05. The degree of associations between independent and dependent variables were assessed by using Odds Ratio (OR). Results: The multiple backward linear regression analysis indicated that workload and work in night shift were significantly able to explain the variance in the level of workplace stress among health profession in Felege-Hiwot referral hospital. Results showed that health professional who work in night shift on sometimes base showed significantly higher level of workplace stress than those who never work in night shift. In addition health professionals who work 50 hours and more per week has significantly high workplace stress level than those who work 40 hours per week. The rest of the socio-demographic and job variables didn’t showed significant relationship with the level of workplace stress. Conclusion: The level of workplace stress among health professional in Felege-Hiwot referral hospital seems to be high. This was due to long working hours and working in night shift.
