Patients have a right to privacy that should not be violated without informed consent. Patient privacy and confidentiality in health care is essential, the right of privacy protects a patient from unwanted intrusions into his/her life and into information about his health, illness, and treatment. Objective:- To assess Knowledge and Attitude of patients’ towards privacy at Tikur Anbessa specialized Hospital. Methods:- A cross sectional descriptive study was conducted at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from may- June 2013. A total number of 422 adult patients were approached from adult patients who were admitted in medical, surgical and gynecological wards of Tikur Anbessa specialized Hospital. Results:- Among the respondents 205 (48.6%) heard about privacy. Four hundred (94.8%) patients were comfortable with nurses and helpers sharing their information than their party, 290 (68.7%) and other patients in the same room, 135 (32%). 237 (56.2%) of patients did not want their medical information to be made available to other official people outside the consultation. A total of 368 (87.2%) patients need informed consent before their data was shared. Conclusion:- The findings demonstrated that patients had little personal and information privacy within the hospital, even if the Government has advocated that patients should be more empowered and be involved in the planning of their own care. Awareness creation about privacy should be enhanced through different medias and practiced by health care providers.
