Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between leadership styles and employees’ performance in selected Sub-city Education Offices of Addis Ababa City Administration. To achieve the purpose, quantitative and qualitative research approaches and descriptive survey research design were used. The sources of data were primary and secondary. Data were collected using Bass and Avolios’ (1995) Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) to measure leadership styles. In addition, employees’ performance data was gathered from document and semi-structured interview were conducted to triangulate the results qualitatively. The participants of study were 168 Employees (28 leaders and 140 subordinates) the return rate was 93%. The analysis was done using SPSS (Version-20). The data were analyzed with both descriptive and inferential statistics using frequency, percentages, mean scores, standard deviations, independent sample t-test, correlation and regression. Data gathered from semi-structured interview were analyzed qualitatively using narrative approach. The findings of the study indicated that employees’ performance had weak, positive and statistically significant relationship with transformational and transactional leadership styles, but statistically insignificant relationship with laissez-faire leadership style. The finding also exposed that, transactional leadership style was the dominant leadership style. Moreover, transactional leadership styles contribute more than transformational to predict and influence employees’ performance. From the findings it was concluded that Sub-city Education Offices employees’ performance assumed to be enhanced when leaders exercised transactional leadership style. It was a dominant leadership style, it played role to attain educational goals especially quality of education as well as implementation of BSC which is being run in the selected Sub-City Education Offices. Thus, it has been recommended that, educational leaders to use both transformational and transactional leadership styles in combination in order to enhance employee performance as well as to achieve the educational goals effectively and efficiently. Furthermore, educational office leaders need to organize short and long term Leadership Management Development Programs which ultimately will help achieve shared views and lay the foundation for incorporating transformational leadership style to its utmost efficiency in collaboration with Government of Addis Ababa City Education Bureau.
