Abstract

Currently challenges in organizational growth and development of Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) to scale up into Medium then large sized companies has got attention in Ethiopia. So far, the government intervenes to the sector to fasten their growth, hoping them to scale up to medium then to large companies. This may need to consider a variety of issues. However according to different literatures lack of formalized and rationalized systems is the most prevalent issue that prevents small businesses from growth and development. As such triggering rationalization and formalization in MSEs have been suggested in literatures. In this regard the research in this thesis attempts to enhance Ethiopian kaizen intervention‟s effectiveness in MSEs. In order to achieve the research objective exploratory approach was adopted. Taking wood and metal work enterprises in Addis Ababa the level of kaizen projects‟ execution, and formalization and rationalization (FR) of their organizational system was assessed. The result shows 61% FR and 68% implementation of Kaizen in the sampled enterprises. Moreover, significant linear relationship with 0.68 correlation is observed. The relationship as well as the intensification gaps suggested the worthwhileness of considering FR decision making. But, the general features of MSEs‟ organizational system on the other hand question the decisions compatibility with their constructional composition. Thus decisions have to be based on the observable surface structure of the enterprises. Contrary to functional-oriented approaches (that uses black-box modeling techniques, common in social sciences); construction-oriented approaches (that uses white-box modeling techniques) are found appropriate to generate decisions that are compatible with the actual constructional assemblies of the enterprises. The proposed model in this research suggests construction-oriented FR decision making process that uses an ontological approach (it considers enterprises at the essential level of abstraction). In chapter seven of the thesis, the decision making process is illustrated taking an enterprise from the sampled MSEs.
