Abstract

Premarital sex and unprotected sexual practices are the major health and life threats among school youths making them vulnerable to STIs, HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancy. A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence of premarital sex, unprotected sexual practice and associated socio-demographic factors among Gedeo zone high school students, SNNRP, Ethiopia, from Feb-March, 2006. Probability proportional to size and simple random sampling methods were used to select the study subjects respectively. A total of 720 unmarried students aged 14- 26 years were included in the study. The findings revealed that 85(11.8%) of the respondents reported sexual exposure prior to this study. The mean age of sexual debut for both sexes was16. 7+2.8(17+ 3 for males and 15.7+2.1 for females).Females started sexual activity earlier than males and this was statistically significant (t=2.02,(df)=83,p=0.046).The commonest reason for starting sex was personal desire reported by 69(81.2%) sexually actives. Fourty five (52.9%) of the sexually actives had sex during the previous 12 months. Among these,4 (8.9%) had more than one sexual partner. Age was significantly associated withpremarital sex [AOR=17.3 (2.6, 114.3)].Among the 45(52.9%) sexually active students in the previous 12 months, 26(57.8%) had ever had sex at least once without condom. The commonest reason for non use of condoms was partner trust reported by 10(50%) sexually active students. The study showed that many students were sexually active, some had multiple sexual partners and many had sex with out using condoms which puts them at a higher risk of acquiring STIs, HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancy.
