Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine teachers’ involvement in decision making in governmental secondary schools of Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-city. To undertake this study, convergent mixed method design was used. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to achieve the research objectives. Accordingly, a questionnaire (open-ended and closed-ended) was prepared. For the qualitative portion, interviews and focused group decision (FGD) were administered. A total of 133(108 teachers, 3principals and 21 PTSA) were included in the study. The schools were selected by simple random sampling method; schools principals by purposive sampling and entire population of PTSA members were selected. Data gathered through questionnaire were analyzed using percentages, mean and standard deviation. Data obtained through interview and FGD were qualitatively analyzed. The study revealed that teachers’ involvement in decision making in secondary schools in general was unsatisfactory; and they participated most in issues related to students’ disciplinary problems and least in schools building related activities. The finding of the study further revealed that the participation of teachers in many areas of managerial decision making was unsatisfactory. Finally, based on the findings and conclusion, recommendations were suggested: teachers need to be encouraged to be active participants in decision making process ; school leaders need to be equipped with the leadership knowledge, skills and qualification; school leaders need to treat all teachers equally; school principals ought to provide conducive environment for all concerned stake holders; and principals and PTSA need to communicate, involve and give clear information to teachers on the issue related with income generation, school budgeting, and school building to develop sense of belongingness between teachers and school leaders.
