Abstract

The issue of gender equity in the family remains to be a subject of scientific inquiry despite the various attempts of researchers to tackle the problem. This paper is a further attempt to shade light on this pressing issue. More specifically, it is designed to study adolescents’ perceptions of their mothers’ and fathers’ behavior in gender role socialization of children to chores inside and outside the home. It also attempted to examine whether there were differences in the mode of parental gender socialization among various religious, educational, ethnicity and sex groups. Subjects of the study include 310 randomly selected adolescent students from three high schools (Dire Dawa Senior Secondary, Bisrate Gebriel, and Sabian high schools) with a total population of 7000. And also 20 parents who were living in Dire Dawa involved in the study. The analysis were carried out using the chi-square, t-test, three-way ANOVA and multiple regressions along with descriptive statistical techniques. Results showed that traditional parental behavior was strongly evident in daughter’s doing inside chores and don’s performing outside chores. General, it is evident from the perspective of the adolescent, that stereotypic gender role are being perpetuated in our society, particularly in the family.
