Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to investigate administrative staff’s Perception towards organizational Change at AAU. A descriptive Survey design was used to conduct the study. The researcher used a five element model of examining perception of change developed by Armenakis, Harris and Field (1999), as a framework to assess the perception of Addis Ababa University employees on the newly implemented Business Process Re-engineering (BPR). The model contains five dimensions of change namely: discrepancy, appropriateness, principal support, efficacy, and valence. Both qualitative and quantitative data were used. The study used a survey questionnaire that was sent to 320 employees and interviews with a representative Officials were conducted. Data was analyzed using percentages, Mean and Standard Deviations. Finally, the results unveiled that discrepancy and appropriateness were among the five change dimensions that were strongly perceived by the respondents. The study revealed that respondents perceived that they have high levels of self-efficacy, although the principal support was perceived as less than satisfactory by respondents in the University, due to a loss of momentum of evidence of such support from senior management. Employees revealed mixed feelings about the personal valence associated with the new BPR with a range of interpretations of likely benefits and evidence of a lack of understanding of the attractiveness and the type of benefits associated with it. The study concluded that employees believe that the new reform practice (BPR) is an appropriate reaction to the existing need in terms of the practical realities facing Addis Ababa University. It is recommended to ensure that change practice is easily accepted and effectively adopted; the Management of Addis Ababa University should increase the principal support to change process, employee participation and involvement during the change process.
