Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to investigate the practices and challenges of mentoring government secondary school of addis Ababa. To conduct the study, discriptive servey apprach was employed and both primary and secondary sources of data were used togather information. Mainly used data collecting instruments were questionnaires, interview and document analysis prepared on the basis of the basic research questions of the study to be addressed. The study was conducted in ten government secondary schools taken from five subcities of Addis Ababa by simple random sampling. The subjects of the study were 30 principals, 59 mentors, 59 mentees and 5 educational officials, totally 153 respondents were included through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed by using simple percentage, frequency counting and mean value. The findings of the study generally revealed that the majority of the principals, mentors and mentees were not trained and oriented about mentoring, thus their perception towards mentoring program was low. The planned mentoring activites included action research projects, proffessional development issues and meeting of mentors and mentees to discuss professional issues. The study, also showed that there was similar perception differences between mentors and mentees on the benefits of the mentoring program.Concerningthe avilability of course material on time or not and relevance of the course material, the weighted mean show that, the timely supply of the course materials rated by the three catagories of the respondents was high and the relevance of the course material was rated medium. From this finding one can conclude that there was timely supply of course materials, however, the relevance of the materials negatively affect the smooth implementaion of the program. The relatioship between mentors and mentees was rated as high and their meeting frequency is a majority of them once per week and spent from 1 to 2 hrs per meeting from this one can concluded that there is difference in distribution of time spent per meeting in secondary school of Addis Ababa in order to get better contribution of the program. Finally, mentoring activities were well done in secondary schools of Addis Ababa and the extent of mentoring practices in these schools was to be found in good position, but still there were serious challenges to implement the program. Therefore, educational leaders at various levels and schools should pay due attention to build their staff with the knowledge and skill of professionalism through effective mentoring program.
