Abstract

Facilities management is an integral part of the overall management of the school. The actualization of the goals and objectives of education require the provision, maximum utilization and appropriate management of the facilities. Assessing the practice and challenges of facilities management in four selected college of Addis Ababa University are the major purpose of this thesis. Furthermore, descriptive survey approach used as a method to provide very engaging and rich explorations of a facilities management program or application as it develops in university setting. This paper describes the practices, concept, nature, types of school facilities, need for facilities in schools, strategies for facilities management, needs for school facilities, staffing, and organizational structure and facility management problems. The physical environment of a school is a major determining factor in the attainment of its objectives. Using a total of 258 questionnaires which is 20% of the total population were distributed to gather pertinent information with regard to practices and challenges of Facilities management. It is a wellarticulated conceptualization of the educational philosophy, goals, objectives and specification for short and long term objectives with facilities management activities. It also includes budget priorities for facilities management. A facilities management plan starts with the educational philosophy that serves the needs of the individual in a dynamic and knowledge based economy. The paper gives clear picture of facilities management challenge in four selected colleges of AAU. The researcher also recommended methods of improvement for facilities management and concluded that a plan for facilities management must be an integral part of the overall organizational plan.
