Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to examine the factors affecting the participation of students in extracurricular activities in three secondary schools of Bole Sub-City of Addis Ababa region. To that end, it was attempted to look into the extent teachers’ and students’ attitude affect students’ perception of extracurricular participation: to identify whether students’ participation differ in relation to types of extracurricular activities: to identify environmental factors that affect students’ involvement in the implementation of extracurricular activities: and to investigate efforts exerted of the school community that exert in encouraging extracurricular activities. Mainly, the study adopted a descriptive research design. Data were collected from 43 secondary school teachers and 170 secondary school students from three secondary schools which were purposively sampled in Bole Sub-City. The study found that heavy learning load, unclear extracurricular activities, lack of interest to participate, absence of motivation and incentives and the school’s emphasis on academic excellence were inhibiting factors for students’ participation in extracurricular activities. The students were not satisfied by the extracurricular activities offered in their school. Participation of teachers and students in extracurricular activities still needs to be given more emphasis by the school administrators were some of the major findings of this study. The overall recommendation of the study is that motivation and incentives must be given to the participants of extracurricular activities by the school administration. The school administration should also fulfill the financial and material resource for extracurricular program and encourage parents to support their children to participate in extracurricular activities.
