Abstract

The objective of this research was to assess the human resource management practice in Orthodox Church secondary schools. The study utilized a survey design which comprised 101 teachers drawn from 4 Orthodox Church owned secondary schools. The schools were purposively sampled and the data was collected through the use of questionnaires, both open and closed-ended .The item data was analysed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS).To support data obtained through e questionnaires FGD and interviews were conducted. From the data collected, the following findings were established. The reasons that push teachers to leave the schools were found to be lack of positive response in asking provident fund, social security and salary increment as the major causes of teachers to leave the schools. Further education had given for some teachers with no predetermined criteria and rationales. Mostly teachers who attend higher education were due to rewarded relationship with principals and the Church administrators. The challenges of human resource management include interference of the church bodies in the decision of the principals, lack of well-organized HRMP, lack of training and professional development among others. The study findings were also reported that, human resource management is crossed over by church leaders to execute their power in the Schools. The results indicated that, the practices of human resource management system in these schools are performing with lack of accountability and responsibilities. In most cases, the management bodies have lack experiences of decision making and leading roles. Simply some of the academic staff members need to do their job in habitual manner. This indicated that it needs a continuous, well prepared training and the output should be evaluated. From the data collected and analysed the following recommendations were made. The HRM means and needs of the Orthodox Church owned secondary schools were found to be lacks sustained system, so it needs to be more strategic. United organizational structure which mange the church schools should be made for all categories of teachers within the Orthodox Church owned schools. The paper equally recommended that, standard of HRM in Orthodox Church schools should be up dated to meet the rapid social changes of Addis Ababa society in particular and the nation progress in general.
