Abstract

When Paul VI visited Uganda in 1969, he made several exhortations not only to the Ugandan faithful but also to all African Christians at large. If we had to mention some of them we would not miss: "You [Africans] must be the missionaries for Africa"; "You may, and must have an African Christianity." John Paul 11 continues those exhortations in Ecclesia in Africa, whose theme focuses on the Church in Africa and its evangelization. Not only does he reemphasize those notes - "You shall be my witness" (Acts 1:8) - but also he gives the guidelines to this making of African Christianity: "Not only did the Synod speak of inculturation, but it also made use of it, taking the Church as God's Family as its guiding idea for the evangelization in Africa." This is an inculturation ecclesiology, which employs anthropological values in the Church. In light of those exhortations, How shall Madagascar inculturate this model of the Church - Family of God? When reflecting on this Apostolic Exhortation, the Episcopal Conference of Madagascar has pinpointed the fihavanana (kindred, communion) as the most appropriate Malagasy value for a deeper development of the Church-Family-of-God. We shall also work in the same line in this study (Thesis): The Church as Family of God: A Malagasy Ecclesiology from the Perspective of the Fihavanana (kindred, communion).
