Abstract
This community based, cross sectional study on factors influencing couples' attitude toward and practice of modern contraception was conducted in Awassa Zuria Awraja, Sidamo Region. The method of data collection was using pre-tested questionnaires administered to randomly selected couples by trained interviewers at the homes of the respondents. A total of 415 households/couples were involved in this study. Thus 415 husbands and 415 wives were interviewed. Mean ideal number of children desired by male and female respondents were 5.7 and 5.3 respectively. More than 80% of the couples had a positive attitude toward modern contraceptive methods. Among the sample population, 9. 6 % were using modern contraceptives at the time of interview. Of these 87% used MC for spacing birth, 10% used it because they wanted no more children. Various factors which have been assumed to have an influence on family planning adoption or resistance among the couples were studied. Among the factors the following were significantly associated with MC use. Literacy (P<0.001), inter spousal communication on family planning (P<0.001) and positive spousal attitude toward MC (P<0.001). Oral contraceptives were used by 75% followed by condom and IUD with 7.5% each.
