Abstract

Background: Sexual desire is a motivational (psychological) state, an interest, wish or drive to seek out or engage in sexual activities. Studies reported that khat has an effect on sexual desire. However, the direction (increased or decreased) ofsexual desire is not well recognized due to the absence of adequate studies, especially in our country. The Objectiveofthe study wasto assess the effect ofkhat chewing on sexual desire among adults in Logia town, North East Ethiopia. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study design was conducted from March 2016 to June 2016 in Logia town. Atotal of three hundred thirty four study subjects both males and females aged 18-49 years were included in the study. House to house data was collected by systematic sampling technique using structured interview questionnaires.Descriptivestatistics (frequency, proportion, mean and S.D) were determined. Logistic regression model with odds ratio and 95%CI were calculated to determine associated factors of sexual desire. Result: The magnitude of low sexual desire and high sexual desirewere132 (39.5%) and 202(60.5%),respectively. Forty eightpercent (80/168) of khat chewers had low sexual desire. While among non-khat chewers, there were 52(31.3%) study participants with low sexual desire. Study subjects with ages of 26-30 years (AOR=2.9(1.1-7.8):95%CI), Females (AOR=1.9(1.1-3.2): 95%CI),non-married individuals (AOR=2.1(1.1-3.8):95%CI) and students (AOR=2.6(1.1-6.3) had significantlyhigher sexual desire than ages of 41years and above, males, married persons and business persons, respectively. However, khat chewing did not show significance association with high sexual desire when adjusting confounding factors. Conclusions: Khat chewingwasnot associated with an increased or decreased sexualdesire in the study. Using the study finding as a baseline source of information, further studies should be done to strength the finding.
