Abstract
This dissertation aimed at investigating the effects of household socioeconomic and demographic factors on the quality of life of orphans. The research was done in Moyo district of Northwestern Uganda. Multi stage sampling technique was used to randomly select two hundred and nine households with orphans. A questionnaire was used to interview the household members. Composite indices were used to generate the categories of quality of life of orphans. Frequencies, cross-tabulations and multinomial logistic regression were used to analyze the data. It was found that most of the orphans were paternal orphans and 48% of the orphans in the sample were above the age of 10. Women tend to care for most of the orphaned children. There was a significant association between quality of life and orphanhood at bivariate level with orphans tending towards poorer quality of life compared to non-orphaned children. It was also found that education of the household head, age of the household head and income of the household were the key factors in determining the quality of life in households. It was therefore recommended that there is need to increase the income of the household as a strategy in improving the lives of the vulnerable children especially the orphans. There was also a felt need for educational programs designed for caregivers to aid them in improving the quality of care they give the orphans. Communities could also be conscientized on the plight of orphans.
