Abstract

Youth constitute the population within the age group of 15 to 24 years. They make-up about 30 percent of the world population. Significant proportion of the population particularly the youth are at high risk of HIV infection despite high level of knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Out-of-school youth are at a much higher risk for HIV/AIDS. Although various surveys have been made to study the sexual behavior of youth in Ethiopia, a few studies assess the reproductive health and sexual behaviors of out-of-school youth. This cross-sectional survey was conducted in March 2008 at Bishoftu Town, Oromia Regional State, to assess the sexual behavior of out-of-school youth in the 15-24 years age group. Both quantitative and qualitative data were employed to undertake this study. For the quantitative section, a standardized questionnaire was prepared while Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were conducted to collect qualitative data. A total of 660 out-of-school youth were participated in the study, of which 325 were males and 335 were females. The finding revealed that, 55 percent of the respondents were sexually active. Average age at the first sexual intercourse is 17.5 years for males and 16.7 years for females. Over one-third of the respondents have started premarital sexual activities because of fun, enjoyment or pleasure. The Majority (62 percent) of sexually experienced youth reported that they had more than one sexual partner. Only half and two-third of them reported to have used condom at first and last sexual intercourse, respectively. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS and STDs is better among Out-of- School Youth (99% Vs. 97%). The main source of information on HIV/AIDS and STDs were mass media (96.5%) ,written materials (79 .4%) and causal partner (78.8%). The majority (93%) of the youth have sufficient knowledge about contraceptive methods, among these 70 percent of them have used contraceptive method at their last sexual intercourse. The multivariate logistic regression analysis that applied on the premarital sexual activities of the youth depicts that variables such as: age, living arrangement, respondent income, household income, parent-youth discussion about sexual matters, having sexual experienced friends, drinking alcohol and exposure to erotic materials are the most important predicators of sexual activities among out-of-school youth. Similarly, parent-youth discussion about sexual matters has significant influence on contraceptive use among the youth. The finding of the survey concluded that out-of-school youth in this study area was exercising high risky sexual activities. Based on this, it was recommended that education on sexual health should be given intensively by health institutions to the youth population and outof- school youth in particular.
