Abstract

Most HIV prevention efforts focus on premarital and extramarital sexual behavior, but in areas with high HIV prevalence, the protective needs of married and cohabiting couples are just as great and often go unmet. Condom use by these couples is generally low. This thesis examines the risk perception and condom use of married persons in kolfe keranyo sub-city based on 416 respondents drawn from three kebeles of the sub city. A cross- sectional descriptive study was conducted in Addis Ababa kolfe Keranyo subcity. The uni- variate bi-variate and multivariate or logistic regression was used to asses factor that affects condom use and risk perception of married individuals in the study cite. The majority of the respondents were aged 35 and above and all are married at the time of survey. Very low proportions of the respondents perceived themselves as high risk of contracting HIV/AIDS. And HIV risk perception was found to be associated with condom use, number of sexual partners, VCT and know someone died because of AIDS. The main reason for the respondents that perceive themselves at risk of HIV is having multiple sexual partners followed by having sexual intercourse without condom and injuries with contaminated sharps. Ever use of condoms was at around 44% among males and 25% among females. The multivariate analysis result shows respondents who do not consider themselves at risk of contracting HIV and those who have negative attitude towards condom use are less likely to use condoms. More over, respondents who had ever used VCT were more likely to use condoms than those who do not undergo VCT test. The information, education and communication programs must address the protective need of married against HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancy and help to correctly asses their own risk perception.
