Abstract

Although urban – ward movement of the population has different forms and may be expressed different forms and may be expressed differently by different scholars, reflecting their specific fields of studies, it still maintains some unique features; which have been reflecting in the socio – economic and demographic attributes of migrants. Such unique features lead to migrational causes specific to these features, because migration is a selective process influencing mainly those who have unique economic, social and demographic characteristics. Adequate knowledge of migrants in general and migrants attributes and their causative factors in particular is therefore, the focus of this study, because they are relevant for proper and effective national and regional strategies. Despite the fact that migration is an important contributor to urban growth, not much is known on the dynamics of the phenomena, this study is therefore, concerned mainly with an assessment of the nature or patterns movement and the process of migration in Ethiopia taking female civil servants in Addis Ababa as a case study. Lack of research regarding the condition of migrants, their level of adjustment in the area of destination and their contribution to their place of origin is an important point in the study of migration. Lots of studies on migration lack this information. This study therefore made an attempt to explain the condition of female migrants working under the Addis Ababa civil service commission, their level of adjustment to the new environment and their expectation as opposed to the actual situation in the destination area. In general, this study concerns to the demographic, socio – economic and movement attributes of migrants together with the patterns of migration and the living condition of migrants after migration which all are specific to the specific study population.
