Abstract

The faith of the Catholic Church concerning itself has gained new momentum since Vatican Council II. The centre of the Council's work consisted in renewing the self-understanding of the Church.' Since then, the vision of the Church has become one of the key realities underlying the modus operandi of evangelisation and the expression of the Christian life in general. In line with this, different models and ecclesiologies have been developed and elaborated. In Africa, the most important event is probably the recent African Synod where the "Church-as-Family" has been chosen as model. However, in the new order of human relations one must pay close attention to the 'signs of the times', that is the historical dimension of the Church. The vision of the Church should be contextualized. This is an element of the new understanding of the Church which emerges from Vatican II. The Council offers a challenge to elaborate an-ecdesiology in the African context. The main focus of this dissertation is, therefore, "ecclesiology" in the context of the Basukuma of Mwanza Archdiocese, Tanzania. But what is the aim of this endeavour? Why this particular study at this moment? Which methodological considerations are involved?
