Abstract

Cirrhosis of the liver is best defined in morphological terms, but in spite of many attempts, discrepancies prevail between different authors. The standard nomenclature which is recommended by the International Association for the study of Liver (1), outlines a rather lengthy explanation of what should be regarded as cirrhosis of the liver. A simple definition is adopted by the World Health Organization (W.H.O.). It is defined as " a diffuse process characterized by fibrosis and the conversion of normal liver architecture into structurally abnormal nodules" (2). Cirrhosis is a world disease of increasing importance, and it is a common cause of morbidity and mortality. In the United Kingdom, it accounts for more than 15 deaths each year, and in the United States, it has been found to be the third leading cause of death in urban males (3). In Africa, the exact incidence is not known, although it is believed to be common.
