Abstract

Thise thesis research is undertaken with the main objective of assessing the existing and potential states of E-waste in some TVET colleges of Addis Ababa. To meet the research objectives a blend of qualitative and quantitative methods were used where unstructured key informant interviews, Focus group Discussions, qualitative investigation and indirect observation assessment were combined with a review of web based secondary resources. In addition, the assessment of the study was done based on the conceptual frame work developed on the life cycle management of E-waste. It is found that E-waste is expected to be a huge problem in the future, given the rise in consumption trend of the target institutions and the general importation trend of the country. There is high accumulation of old ICT equipment in the target institutions of the study. And there is no any specific legal and institutional framework on E-waste in the country. Again the institutions are not aware of disposal options and whether it has any residual value. Moreover, awareness and any integrated framework on where and how to discard E-waste is lacking from the government to consumer or end-user of the products. To draft a solution and act accordingly, development of specific regulations, training and awareness creation, resourcing finance and institutional integrity and setting standards with controlling mechanisms of importation of second hand appliances are recommendations of the study. The need for conducting nation wide baseline study, drafting a system of E-waste management with job opportunities is also recommended.
