Abstract

The present study entitled ' the Jesuit Missions in Mozambique: relations with society and with the political power in Tete, 1941-2011» analyzes the role of the Mozambican nation-building missions. This study was motivated by the fact that some questions about the relationship between the State and the Church in General and between the political power and the missionaries in particular persist. The impact of the Jesuit relations with political power and society in construction of the mozambican citizenship is analysed. The Mozambicans citizenship, in this study is understood to be the set of intrinsic Mozambican values as a result of the union between the colonial past references with post-colonial values. The study focuses on the historical evolution of the Jesuit presence in Mozambique. Documentary and field research show that both entities, i.e., Church and State, complement each other in the performance of their roles to promote social welfare. The question that the study considers criticism concerns the understanding of the sense of cooperation between a secular State and religious congregations. To make the study more restrictive and easy to understand, a particular case was chosen: the Missionaries of the Society of Jesus. From the social point of view, this study seeks to contribute to the solution of the problem of conflict between the secularity of the State and the problems inherent in social development whose answer requires the intervention of both political and religious power. The study reveals that, in certain circumstances, the missionary is on top place than that conferred by common sense because of its objective role in the knowledge of the real problems of the population and recommended solutions.
