Abstract

The right to electoral participation, as stated under the UDHR and ICCPR is basic rights of citizens. In addition to these CEDAW also ensured women right to participation in this election. Ethiopia also ratified these documents and assured under FDRE constitution right to electoral participation of women. The objective of this study is to assess electoral participations of women in MoretnaJiruWoreda. It looks the participation of women in electoral process as candidates, political members, and their participation in voting and campaign. It used a qualitative study to get in-depth understanding of their participation and factors they faced during electoral process. The study used purposive and snow ball sampling techniques and its finding is based on in-depth interviews and key informant interviews. As finding of the study reveals, women had better participation in voting and campaign however, their participation as candidate, political membership and in governing bodies remain insignificant and low. The study concluded that the insignificant and marginalized women electoral participation in 2015 electoral process has been shortened by, ineffective measurement, lack of interest, cultural and political factors. Hence it recommends political parties and governments better to strive to change rooted perceptions and provide attractive area to women political participation.
