Abstract
ABSTRACT This study was designed to find out the most determinant factors that influence the First Cycle Secondary School students in Learning Mathematics. The objective of the study is to explore to what extent the student- and school-level factors that influence the student’ learning of mathematics. The participants of the study were students, teachers, the school principals as well as Woreda and Zone education experts selected by using purposive and stratified sampling techniques. The main data gathering instruments used were questionnaire, interview and focused group discussion. To this end, the study employed mostly quantitative method and also the qualitative one as an integrated part. Results revealed that teacher competency in mathematics education, school contexts and facilities, students’ self directed learning and motivation influence students’ mathematics learning significantly.
