Abstract

This study was aimed at assessing the major factors affecting teachers' involvement in educational research. In order to meet this purpose, some basic questions were raised regarding the status of teachers' involvement in educational research and the factors that affect research involvement in colleges of teacher education in Tigray region. Data have been gathered from 97 participants selected using purposive sampling technique from the staff at Colleges of Teacher Education of Tigray region. The instruments used for data collection were qu"estionnaire, interview and focus group discussion. The study employed percentage and correlation coefficient as methods of data analysis. The study revealed that the status of educational research in CTEs of Tigray region was low. The low status of research was as a result of the lack of financial and material resources (57.5 %), shortage of services (45.5 %), lack of research knowledge and skill (56.7 %), shortage of time (63.6 %), lack of wider opportunity to disseminate their research works (74.0 %), less value given to research (57.l %) and lack of conducive working conditions (61.0 %) made teachers' involvement in educational research difficult. Thus, the recommendations for addressing these issues include creating favorable conditions by allocating sufficient financial resources, increasing the number of academic staff, organizing short trainings, workshops and seminars on research related issues, ratifying a charter which gives value to research in teachers' professional promotion.
