Abstract

Background; Voluntary HIV counseling and testing (VCT) is one of the priority interventions in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support. VCT is an entry point for the prevention of HIV transmission from mother to child and accessing VCT benefit mothers from PMTCT services. For women to take advantage of measures to reduce transmission, they need to know their HIV status. Despite this fact many women are not willing to take voluntary HIV counseling and testing. Objective: to assess knowledge and practice of pregnant women towards HIV testing and counseling as intervention of PMTCT at Adama city administration. Method: quantitative descriptive cross sectional study design with standard structured pretested questionnaire conducted on 396 pregnant women attending antenatal care selected by systematic random sampling from April 22nd to May 20th 2014 at Adama city administration. Result: Sufficient knowledge (65%) and good practice (63.2%) of study participants about VCT/PMTCT were obtained. On examination of multiple factors to detect whether there is association with practice of VCT or not: Educational status (AOR=6.26, 95% C.I= 2.05-19.15), number of ANC (AOR=1.43, 95% C.I=1.85-2.39) and marital status (AOR=2.37, 95% C.I= 1.02-5.52) were found to have an association. Conclusion: Even though good practice of VCT for PMTCT was 63.2%, it is lower while compared to other studies and it was influenced mainly by women educational status. Recommendation: Male partner involvement and coordinated IEC can assist to overcome barriers of VCT for PMTCT practice.
