Abstract

This study aims at examining the calling and role of Catholic Nuns in Kenya. In this endeavor therefore, several areas have been looked at to enable us get a satisfactory report on the whole field of study. In chapter one, foundation has been laid for the study in defining the problem and justifying the significance of the study. An historical background to the whole field of study has been given. The meaning of terms used in this study are then clarified to facilitate the understanding of the study. There is a brief background information of the two districts of research which helps bring the reader into the picture. Finally, the methods used in data collection and the analysis constitute the end of this chapter. The second chapter deals with the calling of nuns in theological perspective. Theology is 'faith seeking to understand'- and this implies completely to this chapter. The theology of vocation is an attempt to arrive at an understanding of vocation both in its general aspects and in its particular incarnations. The chapter therefore utilizes magisterium sources. Therefore, biblical, the special patristic and the calls in the Bible have been looked at; the Christian Conception of Vocation and how several categories of people see vocation. The various reasons for becoming nuns are also very significant because they enable us get the idea that to be a fully professed member, one really has to receive God's call into this type of life. This thesis looks at nuns, first and foremost as women who have taken the three evangelical vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. These vows are extensively looked at in the third chapter. The vows as we shall see, are a sign of total and perpetual dedication of one's entire being to the service of God and one's fellow-men. This is emphasized in the part which deals with the reasons why nuns take vows. Each vow is dealt with singly in four main areas; that is, their Biblical setting, the Theology of each vow; Cannon law and each vow and lastly the practice of each vow in which case the problems are included. This chapter also offers compassionate guidance on the emotional challenges facing those who take the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. In chapter four we attempt to trace the history of women's consecrated life in the Catholic Church in Kenya; the admission and training period. Nuns in the Kenyan society, are in one sense, very powerful women. They occupy, to some people a prestigious position in society, command respect which is almost universal and are free to devote themselves to work without biological interruptions or familial responsibilities. This is given great importance in chapter five which deals with the role of nuns in the church, in health, in education and in social work. A case study of each is given for further clarification. Finally, in chapter six, a summary of the findings and recommendations of this study are given. Others might like to research in greater detail certain aspects of nuns' lives at this time, for instance their influence upon the teaching and nursing profession, or the difference, if any, between a native congregation and a foreign one. The opportunities for further research are limitless, and it is hoped that somebody will avail of them.
