Abstract

This thesis begins with the clarification of the term ‘syncretism’. Since it has been undergoing a series of analyses and changes in meaning among theologians from Middle Ages, it becomes necessary to grasp its importance in the present day. This helps to bring into focus the understanding of our survey of six syncretistic practices among Christians in Nigeria. The crisis of faith is based on the fact that certain Christians find it difficult to cope with the pressure which the disintegrating traditional world-view and other life-crises exact on their practice of faith. They are torn apart by the strong influence of their material-spiritual world-view and the demanding practice of Christian faith. Their desire to deal with the situation brings them into relationship with traditional religious specialists, diviners, medicine men and women. In their quest for a more sustaining spirituality, they give credence to the form of personal and cosmic wholeness and pragmatism which conflict with Christian way of life and undermine Christ as the climax of self-communication of God. Responding to this kind of spiritual quest, the thesis outlines the authentic Christian position, and answers the questions raised by some syncretic practices. It takes this response further and develops a spirituality from within the people’s ‘sensus Dei’. It also challenges the Nigeria Church to face up to the crisis as it appears in the Nigerian respective cultures.
