Abstract

We Pare have the reputation among the neighbouring tribes of being experts both in divination and 'magic' practices as well as of being cunning in dealing with strange situations! Let be whatever may be, one thing is certain, however, and that is, the Pare, being confronted with some specific material and social conditions of existence were socialized to be hardworking, authoritative and military like in character. From the very early age, every male child was initiated to the qualities of boldness, promptness, cleverness in the use of arms and to be particularly shrewd in public speaking (Kuteta Mburi). Of course, some changes in this mode of life have taken place since the introduction of both the colonial political domination and Christianity. Yet, a quick glance over the district colonial administrative records and over some christian missions private records, reveals the fact that the Pare people had been represented as being quite obstinate to the established authorities. Likewise, many of the present day government administrators and politicians depict the Pare as "the people of endless cases" (watu wa makesi).
