Abstract

The purpose of this study was to highlight the role of religion in peace building. The area of study was Laisamis Constituency, Marsabit County. To achieve this, the study focused on approaches applied by the Catholic Church in peace building and possible alternatives to these approaches. The historical neglect of the region and the occurrences of conflict can be traced back to 1960‟s during the era of shifta war. The marginalization was more pronounced since the cutting off of the Northern frontier district, which included Northern Kenya in which Laisamis constituency lies in within the larger Marsabit County. The Church through the first missionaries felt the need to empower the community mainly through education. The Church built schools and till now, it runs various schools throughout the constituency. The need for humanitarian assistance, health services and education opportunities, offered the Church an opportunity to combine provision of spiritual services with social services, peace building initiatives have proved to be one such social service. The researcher relied on both primary and secondary data sources. For primary data, interview schedule and questionnaire was used while for secondary data, related literature was used. Both qualitative and quantitative data analyses were used. The conflict transformation theory was used to emphasize the need for community involvement and, Appleby‟s concepts of unique religious capacity were incorporated in the theoretical framework. The study revealed among other findings that, First, the Church‟s success greatly depended on local community involvement through development work. This created a sense of ownership and responsibility. Secondly, that the church faces political, cultural, financial and human resource constraints in its peace work. Third, the church has failed to recognize the capacity of other religious groups in peace building. Fourth, the major conflict causes in the constituency are political competition and ethnicity.
