Abstract

The present study of “Assessment of Effectiveness of Theatre in Social Transformation” seeks to evaluate the usefulness of theatre in social transformation through organization of community trust, reconciliation and healing of victims in Eldoret, Kenya. Theatre has enormous possibilities in the field of peace building, especially when it is related to analyze the defects and social problems. Kenya is facing the evil of ethnicity, hatred, poverty, terrorism and unemployment. Given the nature of Kenya’s conflicts this study helps as a tool to examine the drama strategies that have been used in peace building in Eldoret. The theatrical acting is something more than a means of artistic expression; it is a space for meeting, discussion and confrontation of individual point of view and that of the collective. The outcomes show that drama activities help to run a space for the victims of violence to gather and express themselves freely. Theatre gives them the opportunity to share their experiences, their culture and their difficulties and develop collective responses to these issues. The research has found out that drama activities contribute to building of peace at the latent and post conflict stages.
