Abstract
Crime disrupts the development of any society let alone countries in the developing world. The state of the economy plays a great role when it comes to dealing with rates of crime in a society. Those who feel left out and perceive others are the ‘haves’ in society could easily build resentment and engage in petty to major crimes in an effort to try and get what they feel they deserve but are denied due to class differences. Urbanization also plays an important role when trying to understand the rise of crime rates in a society. This is because many individuals move to the cities that then leads to over population, strain on the limited resources and eventually to over-crowded informal settlements. Efforts have been made to understand the causes of high rates of crime and engaging the perpetrators of crime in forms of rehabilitation and behavioral reforms. Supported by the conflict transformation theory and the transtheoretical model of behavioral change, this study sought to investigate efforts undertaken in Korogocho by the Legend Group to reform youth from crime and find out what methods have been used to try and reform these youth. Limited by resources, the Legend group taps into the power of the human psyche by delicately using dialogue to share experiences, be honest about one’s actions and show encouragement. Most of the youth engaged in crime are forced by circumstances which then presents the need for immediate action by the government to devolve resources. Non-Governmental Organizations also need to understand the strife within the societies that exists that could potentially hinder any prospects for transformation of behaviors and relationships.
