Abstract
This research intends to show how meaning is transferred in sports register, particularly the game of football in Kenya. Football language shows to a great extent some form of dependence on terminologies and phrases that are usually associated with other styles and different professions in a bid to give meaning and be understood. The research intends to accomplish this by realizing the following three research objectives: To identify methods and aspects of communication that are used by football commentators, to show how meaning is transferred in football register and to investigate professions and registers that form the basis of language use in football register. This research was based on the theory of Systematic Functional Grammar that was postulated by Halliday (1985). This theory holds an argument that as a product of social life and interaction, language was invented for communication purposes in relation to different contexts. It views language as a network of meaning that is represented by grammatical elements. Data that was used in this research was collected both in the library and in the field. Written texts concerning football in books, theses, newspapers and sports magazines were investigated in order to generate information concerning research topic and literature review. Football commentary on radio and news concerning football on radio and television were investigated in order to generate enough data. Data that was collected includes vocabularies, terminologies, phrases and sentences. Data collected was sorted and analyzed on the basis of the research objectives in conformity with the principles of the research theory. Data presentation has been done through tabulation and written essay. This research has been presented in five chapters. Chapter one includes research topic, research questions and objectives, scope and limitations of the study, literature review, theoretical framework and research methods. The second chapter identified methods and aspects of communication that are used by football commentators. They include, code mixing, code switching, repetition, similies, personification, proverbs, rhetorical questions and direct translation. The third chapter examined how meaning is transferred in football register. Forms of meaning identified include conceptual meaning, social meaning and textual meaning. The forth chapter investigated professions and registers that form the basis of language use in football register. Terminologies associated with the field of medicine, defense, hotel and hospitality, business and love relationships were identified. The fifth chapter will include summary, conclusions and recommendations. Further research in relation to language use in written texts, among football fans and other sports is recommended. The findings of this research are therefore expected to be of great benefit to students, teachers, researchers and other linguistic scholars who intend to dig deeper into semantics and pragmatics, especially on how meaning is transferred in different contexts and registers. The findings shall also give enormous contribution to researchers who would be keen to develop new styles in sociolinguistics.
