Abstract

Protracted inter ethnic among pastoralist communities continue to escalate despite transformative interventions by international organization, civil societies and the government. The main objective of this study was to find out alternative ways of transforming these protracted conflicts among pastoralists. The study used a case of Rendile-Borana conflict in Marsabit Sub-County. Primary and secondary data was used in this study. For primary data the researcher used a hybrid of descriptive and explanatory research design. Stratified and purposive samplings were used. Semi structured interview, focus group and participatory observation were used to gather information. The data was analyzed through use of the statistical package of Social sciences (SPSS). The research findings revealed that the main causes of Rendile-Borana conflict are land and livestock, government failure, political wrangles, culture and long standing animosity. The correlation of these variables makes the conflict very complex. The study has shown that the possible solution to the Rendile-Borana conflict is empowerment of the local community to be agents of their own change. The first step of this “bottom up approach” conscientization which should go hand in hand with Trauma healing. Secondly is promotion of interactive activities which will help in creating new relationships, rebuild trust, cooperation and break down negative attitudes and perceptions. Finally is to promote development activities which will diversify means of livelihood. In the view of the finding the research recommended the government and civil society to adopt the bottom up approach which is suitable in transformation of protracted conflicts among pastoral communities.
