Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate teachers’ activities in public boarding secondary schools in Nairobi County that lead to peacebuilding. The study was necessitated by the observation that despite efforts to reduce conflicts that escalate to strife, they still regularly occur in public boarding secondary schools, manifesting as strikes, violence and infernos among others. Nairobi is a unique study region owing to the accumulation of diverse backgrounds of its students, teachers and the exposure and influence of emerging issues on its youth population. Forty-six participants drawn from four schools, administrative and education policy institutions were interviewed. The researcher established that most conflicts in schools have as their root cause a lack of understanding, and subsequent lack of effective communication in studentteacher, and to a lesser extent student-student relations. The researcher concludes that structured dialogue is the main factor that could mitigate conflicts escalating to strife, and that the teacher is best placed to take the leading role in this dialogue, hence transforming the conflicts. The researcher recommends that there is need for a paradigm shift in education from one that is textbook, teacher and examination centered to one that has amongst its’ major guiding principles, the experience of students and peacebuilding skills that supply non-violent means in settling conflicts.
