Abstract

The primary objective of this thesis was to investigate whether human insecurity posses a challenge to national security using the case of the Mombasa Republican Council. The research area was inspired by the lack of prominence of the human security paradigm in security studies, particularly as it translates in policy and practice albeit being a very critical area of concern. The research was guided by John Burton’s Human-Needs theory. The research design adopted in this thesis was case study as it focused on the case of the Mombasa Republican Council. In this regard, the study was carried out in Mombasa County which is located along the Kenyan Coast. Both quantitative and qualitative data was collected from forty two respondents. The data collected was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences and was presented in the form of contingency tables. The major finding of the research was two-fold. First, it illustrated that there is a link between security, development and governance which together constitute aspects of human security. Second, it confirmed that human insecurity does pose a challenge to national security. Several recommendations are proposed in the study; however the major recommendation to the Government of Kenya is the need for a review of the National Security Strategy in which human security should receive more prominence.
