Abstract

The general topic of conflict resolution by mediation is clearly important. In many areas of life the need for mediation arises. Recently a few scholars have begun to apply Lonergan’s cognitional analysis and his philosophy of consciousness to the issue. But such applications are only just beginning to emerge. There is clearly room for and need for further inquiry. The present study examines the work of Kenneth R. Melchin and Cheryl A. Picard in their book entitled Transforming Conflict through Insight. In their book, Melchin and Picard present Lonergan’s position which they call Insight Theory and apply this theory to conflict resolution with a method which they call Insight Mediation. My study presents a detailed exposition of the work of Melchin and Picard along with my own summary of Bernard Lonergan’s philosophy. Drawing more on Lonergan’s philosophy, I argue that the work of Melchin and Picard can be expanded. I present notion of bias, integral self-appropriation and Lonergan’s notion of mediation as three further resources from Lonergan that illuminate mediation theory and as areas of Lonergan’s philosophy that clearly take us beyond what has been done so far. In presenting these three areas, I also show their relevance to and their role in the work of conflict transformation processes. Clearly, how the enlarged application of Lonergan’s philosophy works in practice needs to be worked out. Nonetheless, insofar as it builds upon and expand what has so far been done is suggestive and merits further study and application.
