Abstract

What are the causes of Ethnic Identity and conflict? Discussion provides a conceptual understanding of the origins and dynamics of Burundi 's conflict. Whether latent or acute, the causes, which peaked in 1965, 1972, 1988, and 1993, are attributable both to the ethnic manipulation during the colonial period and to disastrous management of the country by Burundian elites from the 1960s on. The discussion comes to two main conclusions: firstly, Burundi is faced with several types of conflict superimposed on each other, even if the ethnic dimensions outweighs all others. Secondly, it is absolutely imperative to improve Burundi's conflict management structures and mechanisms at both the central and local levels. The discussion concludes with a number of recommendations aimed at improving Burundi's institutional and constitutional foundations so as to ensure the separation of the executive, legislature, and judiciary, breathe new life into non-state conflict management structures such as the media and civil society, and combining tradition with modernity.
