Abstract

When I decided to write about prostitution, I knew very well what a great challenge I had taken up. People were shocked when I told them that my topic is about prostitution, perhaps because I am a male religious and therefore they thought this topic was not appropriate for me. Leaving behind this mentality of being religious and its taboos, I took the challenge as a social minister to speak: about prostitution, an evil which dehumanises women and children. For so long a time, precisely since my youth, I have encountered this problem of prostitution and it made me think a lot about the conditions of women who are most of the time oppressed by structures imposed on them. I live very close to the border of Togo and Ghana, five minutes walk to' "No man's land". That area is considered in the whole of Togo as the headquarters or the "kingdom" of the prostitutes. This is why I am so aware of this phenomenon of prostitution. From the time I moved from my country and visited other, African countries, I have come to believe that the problem is not only in my country. Therefore in this paper, I will from time to time quote the real life experience of prostitutes and mention the name of some countries. But all the names of people that will be mentioned are fictional in order to safeguard the identity of the persons involved. My purpose of writing this paper is to challenge the institutions which support prostitution, to call attention for more concern for women's plight, to denounce the abuses against children involved in prostitution and suggest an approach on how to deal with prostitution. I want that all people of goodwill become more aware of this evil of prostitution.
