Abstract

People in Tanzania are living in a society characterized by a number of problems, including poverty and massive unemployment among the youth. Such society needs relevant information in order to enable members of the public to use it for the development of Tanzania. Objectives: To find out what sources the youth use to obtain information on their plight and solution to their problems, to ascertain proportion of the jobless youth with access to information related to their plight, and to indicate to what extent newspapers created awareness to the jobless youth as far as poverty IS concerned and what solutions have been offered Available data show that about 40% of the youth depend on books as their major source of information on their plight. While 26.25% of people interviewed said, solution to the problems related to youth's plight is provision of employment and having good primary education in Tanzania. Only 23. 75% of the unemployed and underemployed youth said newspapers disseminate information on poverty, while 15.9% of the unemployed and underemployed said they use newspapers to obtain information on poverty. A big proportion of the youth have access to information that relate to their plight. Several respondents from youth groups interviewed said they read newspapers directly or indirectly. Respondents who know how to read and write either English or Kiswahili languages said they have access to information provided by these newspapers directly. Respondents who do not know how to read and write either English or Kiswahili languages said they have access to information provided by these newspapers indirectly because they depend on receiving information from other newsreaders that know how to read either English or Kiswahili newspapers. With regard to the level of awareness created by newspapers the findings, indicate that newspapers have somehow created awareness to the youth on the subject of poverty through publishing stories on the efforts being made by the government to alleviate poverty in the Tanzanian society. The quality of knowledge the youth have about poverty. The data indicate that newspapers have somehow helped a large proportion of the youth acquire some basic knowledge on their plight. However not every youth has so far acquired better knowledge from reading these newspapers. Design: Randomised study: The researcher used the following data collection means: Questionnares, Interviews, direct observation and documentary analysis. The research problem was to determine the effectiveness of Daily News, Guardian and Msanii Afrika newspapers III disseminating information on poverty to the youth. Setting: Two districts of Ilemela and Nyamagana in Mwanza City. The population of study comprised of 40 Unemployed youth and 40 Underemployed youth. The Unemployed youth' participants were 16 (40%) men and 24 (60%) Women in the age range of 15 to 35, and the underemployed youth partiCipants were 17 (42.5%) men and 23 (57 .5%) Age, income, being male, being female, being married or being single and level of education was significantly associated with reading habits. Level of awareness created by English newspapers to youth on poverty is high compared to that of Kiswahili newspapers.
