Abstract

The Kiga are a people who occupy South-Western part of Uganda. Kiga Land is bounded by Ankole in the East, Rwanda (a Republic of Central Africa) in the South, Congo in the West (present day Zaire) and Toro in the North. Kiga people like many other African people were aware of the Supreme being (God) whom they gave different names and attributes. They were also aware of the spiritual world. The Kiga were capable and are capable of philosophical analysis of the existence of a Supreme being by the use of Natural, onto-logical and revealed proofs. This evidence disproves those western thinkers who argue that the idea of a supreme being (God) is a Loan to the Africans as a whole. Emil Ludwig, made the notorious statement. "How can the untutored Africans conceive God? How can this be? Deity is a philosophical concept which savages are incapable of framing. The information presented in this paper is a portion of the Kiga traditional religious and philosophical wisdom gathered from a number of Living traditional sages and a number of written sources. The information presented is the original concept of God and Spirits before "Contamination" by foreign religions. In the first chapter, a clear picture of how the Kiga understand God is given. They were puzzled by their very existence and this set them to make a philosophical analysis both Ontological and Cosmological. In order to understand God better, they gave him names which in a way march with his activities. They also use Anthropomorphic expressions in order to comprehend him better. The Kiga also tried to describe his spiritual nature as well as transcedence and Immanence.
