Abstract

This project focused on the effect of employee career development among teachers in public primary schools in Starehe District, Nairobi County. The importance of career development in relation to performance was explored and evaluated. Performance in public primary schools was explored and highlighted. The statement of the problem was clearly demonstrated. The objectives of the study were highlighted from which the research questions were derived. The beneficiaries of the study, the scope, limitations and assumptions of the study were indicated. The literature review focused on career development theory, how and why careers are changing, career planning, career development stages, career management, inter-organizational and postorganizational careers, organizational support for career development, career planning and development in a public primary school, career management problems, empirical review and the conceptual frame work. The study utilized a survey research design and the target population of the study consisted of 420 teachers from all public primary schools in Starehe District, Nairobi County. Simple random sampling was used to determine the sample size which was 106 teachers. A questionnaire with a Likert-Type scale with the range of 1-5 was the main data collection instrument and was pre-tested at Kiboro primary school. Data collected was processed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences and analyzed using central tendency measures, dispersion measures and Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient. The data was presented in the form of graphs, tables and charts. The findings of the study were that promotion, job mobility, redeployment and continuous learning affect the performance of employees to a great extent. It was therefore recommended that the government should invest in skills development and training of employees and school management should come up with strategies that enhance employee performance in all aspects.
