Abstract
Adwa is a historic place located in northern Ethiopia. In spite of its world wide historical significance Adwa has so far not received any proper attention to designate the area as a place of paramount heritage importance, even at a national level, and is still remaining with no memorial reference and living witness on the ground. Adwa ecotourism initiative launched by College of Development Studies (CDS), now taking place to develop the area into an ecotourism place of attraction has a profound significance in preserving the area in terms of historical, cultural, archaeological and natural values that the area withholds, in addition to the economic benefit it would contribute to the national economy in general and to the local community in particular. This paper coined as “Adwa Community Based Ecotourism Development: The case of Adwa and its Environs” is with an intention of assessing the rich potential of the area as a destination of multiple attractions and to look at the possibilities of developing these multifaceted values into valuable assets of diverse attractions and various products of tourism. The intention of the study is about repositioning of the existing development thinking into alternative tourism development approach. Adwa can predominantly be categorized as having an ecological feature of mountain ecosystem with unique features of cultural landscape, diverse natural and cultural heritage resources. The alternative way is to pursue community tourism, which can be identified as Community Based Tourism (CBT), since CBT is a genuinely collaborative model of tourism with destination management of the community that has the potential to create real and lasting benefits across a wide spectrum of stakeholders. As development study; considering the challenges of sustainability is also a critical issue because of the apparent global environmental challenges encountered and the various elements of uncertainty and risks involving in relation to the effects of a wide range of human activities on the environment. The concept of sustainable tourism has its own sets of principles that would help to put the study in proper context. With these perspectives the study will also focus on issues and concerns related to sustainable ecotourism development of the area. It will try to examine the community based approach and focuses on its core features namely the establishment of strategic foundations like community building - in terms of destination management and its development with ideas in relation to the various possibilities of tourism product developments, tourism infrastructures and facilities as well as the interpretation works to be considered within the study, interactively.
