Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the Perception of premarital education and divorce rate among followers of the Ethiopian Evangelical Churches in Addis Ababa City Administration. A descriptive study was employed as a study design. The sample consisted of 250 participants from six evangelical churches. Data were collected from married (200) and divorced (50) people through questionnaires, detailed interviews with key informants (42) and focus group discussions (24). Descriptive statistics, independent t – test, ANOVA and correlations were used to analyze quantitative data. Strong Positive correlation was found between premarital education and divorce rate [r= .401**, p< .0.01]. The weaknesses, strengths as well as the relevance and importance of the premarital education were identified and discussed. The findings were analyzed. On the basis of the findings of the study conclusions in the bases of this study, the main conclusions of the study were a) premarital education reduces divorce rate, b) Budgetary constraints have significantly limited the impact of premarital education on divorce rate, and c) Churches need to make serious effort to solve the budgetary problems. Accordingly the conditions were made to encourage churches to solicit funds for the premarital education programs, and to prepare standard and comprehensive teaching manual and to carefully fix duration of premarital teaching programs.
