Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to assess the practice of OBT in Entoto TVET College and to identify the problems encountered in implementing OBT. The college was selected using purposive sampling. However, the trainers and trainees were selected using simple random sampling. Questionnaires and interviews were employed as a data gathering instruments. The data gathered was analyzed and interpreted using descriptive statistics in the form of mean, percentage and frequency. The results of the study revealed that there is gap in knowing how to implement and follow the procedure, there is scarcity of resources, practical performance assessment was less used, poor teaching method was employed by trainers, lack of sufficient training resources and lack of administrative support. From the findings it was concluded that there has not been an attempt to see and modify the practical skills of trainers and the scarcity of resources become an obstacle for the trainees to get practical training of all round type. Moreover, it can be concluded that the overall teaching-learning process was against what the program required. This indicates the college is not in the position to achieve the objective stated in the Ethiopian national TVET strategy with regard to OBT, indicating the college has to work hard to achieve the expected level. Accordingly, in order to overcome the challenges to realize the objective of the OBT program the study has recommended the implementation of integrated effort of all the concerned bodies, but mainly trainers, trainees, TVET administrators and the government.
