Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between family structure and adolescents’ academic achievement motivation among Sebeta administrative town government high school students. Participants of this study were 94 adolescents from intact family selected randomly, and 44 adolescents from stepparent and 56 adolescents from single parent family. Totally, 194 students participated in the study. Data about participants were collected through questionnaire, Academic Achievement Motivation scale (AAM), Parental Warmth and Control scale (PWC) and biographical form. Data were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistical methods. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and ANOVA were employed to uncover the associations among the variables considered. The results revealed that there is a significant difference among adolescents from different family structures in their academic achievement motivation. Adolescents from intact family scored higher on academic achievement motivation than adolescents from single and stepparent family. No significant difference was found between male and female adolescents in their academic achievement motivation.Similarly adolescents from intact family percieved their parents as more warm and controlling than adolescents from single and stepparent family. Practical implications of the findings are presented.
